WASHING CLOTHES

Use a low temperature wash-most detergents work well at 30°C but especially liquid detergents.

Wait until you have a full load, if not consider combining your washing with your housemates. Wash clothes less frequently – maybe yesterdays shirt is OK for another day or 2.

Dry clothes using the outside line – check the weather forecast for the coming week and choose a dry day to do your washing. Even in the winter clothes will dry outside especially if it’s windy. You can always finish them off in the tumble dryer if they are nearly dry.

Remember not to dry clothes in the house - this will result in mould and cost you far more than using the tumble dryer.

COOKING

Avoid cooking separately – use the oven to cook multiple meals at the same time. Cook meals together with your housemates whenever possible.

Use the microwave rather than the oven if possible.

Slow cookers are worth considering for easy hot food and great economy.

ELECTRICAL ITEMS

Charge portable electrical items at university for free.

Fill the kettle with the correct amount of water. If you only need to make a few cups of coffee then put in just enough.

Switch your appliances (such as televisions and microwaves) off rather than leaving them on standby. Turn off computers when not in use – particularly gaming computers.

Switch off lights whenever you can.

HEATING AND HOT WATER

Do not use your own portable heaters – using the central heating is way cheaper.

Turn the house thermostat down as much as you can. We would recommend 20 or 21 degrees. Turn down the radiator thermostat in rooms where a student is away, even it’s just for just a few days. Remember not to turn off the heating when you are away over the winter as a little heating is required to prevent pipes freezing. We would suggest turning thermostat down to 12 degrees for this period. To avoid causing condensation and mould continue to open windows each day to allow for ventilation but don’t forget to close afterwards.

If it’s cold put heating on for longer rather than turning up the thermostat.

Put extra layers on before resorting to the heating. A jumper can go a long way.

Take shorter showers – hot water is expensive.
